Well, this weather is really posing more of a flooding problem than a snow problem. Ugh! Traveling to class was difficult in several inches of slush. It could have been worse, though. This storm unleased an onslaught of tornados in the Midwest, killing 14 people. The violent nature of this storm is illlustrated by the tight configuration of isobars on the surface map below. Also, it appears as if there is some more moisture over the rockies, so we could potentially be getting more precipitation in the near future. The coutner clockwise nature of this precipitation indicates another low pressure system. Regardless, we will most likely see cloudy skies, as the entire center of the county is submersed in a large low pressure system.

Well, this wasn't really what I was hoping for, to be honest. I was hoping for more snow, and it appears as if Eau Claire is not in the right position relative to the low pressure system. Because Eau Claire falls in the eastern quadrant of the pressure system, we're currently experiencing a crappy wintry mix.  The counterclockwise motion of the low pressure system is brining plenty of moisture up from the maritime tropical air masses, but it's just not cold enough here for any significant amount of snow. Ultimately, it appears as if I will not be missing class tomorrow.

Current Conditions
Temperature: 22
Wind: ESE at 3 mph
Dew Point: 16
Humidity: 73%

Just bracing for the impending snowpocolypse . . . or so I thought. Unfortunately, it's looking more and more like we'll only get a minimal amount of snow.  I know I'm supposed to be making these assumptions by myself, but I couldn't help but look at the weather forecasts, which are now only calling for 1-3 inches. But one can hope, I guess. Unlike yesterday, the clouds cleared up in the early morning as the high pressure system moved in.

With the above maps, you can see why many were bracing for a severe winter storm. The combination of extremely moist air and low pressures over the rocky mountains caused much excitement in the local weather community. It will be interesting to see how this weather develops in the next few days.

Current Conditions
Temperature: 22 F
Wind: ESE at 5 mph
Dew Point: 14 F
Humidity:  66%

Overall, today was a rather cold day, with temperature well blow freezing. Currently, the skies are mostly clear as high pressure system is covering the region. Later tonight, a low pressure system will likely come in from the West, which will bring clouds and possibly precipitation.

Well, I was kind of hoping for some snow today, but obviously that didn't happen. As Joe mentioned in his weather briefing, the snow storm drifted to the south of Wisconsin. I don't foresee any snow for tomorrow, either. The doppler radar is not showing any stow storms in the near area. Currently, wisconsin lies in the middle of two low-pressure systems, which is responsible for the cloudy weather. I do not foresee and severe weather within the near future, as their seems to be little opportunity for convection.

The Skew T Plot shown below reinforces my prediction for mild weather, for it indicates very stable conditions in the state.

Green Bay WI (GRB-72645) - Current

Judging by the Jet Stream, I would say that there is a small chance of snowfall within the next few days, but I do not think we will get as much as I previously anticipated.

Whoops, forgot to blog the other day. Anyways, the weather is getting a lot more interesting. We're actually getting some snow, and we could be getting a substantial amount. Currently, it's 26 degrees and clear, with winds coming from the West at 4 mph. Interestingly enough, the bulk of jet stream is pushing right through Eau Claire County, which will bring in cold air from the continential polar air mass. While the doppler radar depicts some precipitation to our immediate West, it appears as if it is too far south to really affect the Eau Claire area. However, there is currently a large storm system in the pacific ocean, which, in combination with cooler air from the jet stream, could unleash a large amount of snow in the Midwest. I'm really hoping for some snow.

Thursday, February 16, 2012

With a high of 40 degrees, today's weather was perfect for outdoor activities. Currently, winds are coming out of the west at 7 mph. Earlier in the afternoon, I observed some cumulus cloud in the east. Interestingly enough, the jet stream is positioned just to the south of Wisconsin, and it's currently brining in a lot of air from the continental tropical air. For the next few days. I predict similar temperature conditions in the Eau Claire area. The following map from Intellicast.com depicts the current jet stream conditions.

It felt like Spring weather today. Currently, the temperature is at a tolerable 36 degrees. The wind conditions are very calm, with most weather stations reporting a wind speed of 0 mph. A few minutes ago, I observed some stratocumulus clouds to the south, which may be indicative of the calm conditions and possibly a high pressure system; however, according to the surface map provided by the National Weather Service, there is no clear high pressure system over the state. So, I'm not sure if my analysis of the cloud cover is accurate. For tomorrow, I predict very similar conditions, with a small chance of light precipitation.

Snow at last! Well, the Eau Claire area received a modest amount of snow today, about a half an inch. The current temperature is 26 degrees, and winds are coming out of the south at 5 mph. I don't expect this snow to last that long, though. Currently, the surface maps on weather.com illustrate how a variety of warm fronts are surrounding the midwest, so we may be in for some warmer weather tomorrow.

The weather today was cold and windy. Although the temperature was approximately 19 degrees, it felt far colder with the 17 mph winds from the North. I did not observe any precipitation, but my roommate informed me that he saw some light snow flurries. Given the current conditions, I do not believe him. While the surface map below depicts 75% cloud coverage near Eau Claire county, I must note that I did not observe any clouds in  the sky. With the illustrated pressure readings and circular wind directions, it is clear that there is a low pressure system located right over lake Michigan. For tomorrow, I predict slightly colder weather with no precipitation.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012

Today, I woke up running late for my 8:00 a.m. class, as usual. When I stepped outside, I found it shockingly cold. I later learned it was approximately 19 degrees outside, which is quite colder than I've been accustomed to with this warm winter. I'm guessing this warm weather was due to the shift in the jet stream. In addition, the cloud cover was an astonishing 0%. On a somewhat related note, the halo around the moon last night was incredible. Anyways, I am not quite sure what caused this lack of cloud clover. At first I incorrectly attributed it to a low pressure system, but I dismissed that notion after consulting a surface map on Accuweather. Since there does not appear to be any fronts coming in as I'm typing this ( at 9:30 p.m.), I'm guessing tomorrow's conditions will be very similar to today.

Monday, February 6, 2012

Oddly enough, Eau Claire has seen similar weather conditions for the past week. Today was no exception, as the area hosted cloudy skies and temperatures hovering just around the upper 30s. Following the trend of the past few days, the wind speed was a slow 6 mph out of the Northeast. Really boring weather, if you ask me. I want to see some precipitation. Right now, however, it's late at night as I type this, and the conditions have changed somewhat. The clouds have cleared up completely. For tomorrow, I predict colder temperatures to occur as the low cloud cover allows the surface to lose its latent heat.

Saturday, February 4, 2012

Overall, it was an incredibly lazy Saturday for me, and I didn't get outside until dark. Therefore, I could not make the most accurate observations. I'll do my best here. The wind conditions were pretty mild, with winds coming out of the southwest at 5 miles per hour.  Similar to the rest of the week, the temperature hovered around the freezing point, while the dew point remained at 24 degrees. From what I observed from through my kitchen window, there was very little cloud cover. For tomorrow, I predict warmer temperatures as a result of the southwest winds.

Thursday, February 2, 2012

Overall, the conditions today were very similar to yesterday. Cloud cover reached 100%, and temperatures remained above freezing, with a high of thirty-seven degrees. The northeast winds remained calm at about five miles per hour. Like yesterday, the due point was twenty-nine degrees. For tomorrow, I predict similar temperatures. In addition, I do not think this area will receive any precipitation, as there is very little conflict between pressure systems.

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

I'm no meteorologist, but my prediction about today's weather proved to be reasonably accurate. The high temperature for today was thirty-eight degrees, and it's currently thirty-three. Right now, the cloud coverage is 100%, and the dew point is twenty-nine degrees, according to accuweather.com. Currently, winds are moving out of the North at three miles per hour. While central Minnesota is experiencing some mild snowfall, I do not expect any for Eau Claire Co. I do, however, expect icy roads and sidewalks for tomorrow morning. Provided by weather.com, the map below depicts the aforementioned wind.
